The equipment pictured on this page is used to perform
Basic Life Support (BLS) equipment is available on all of our ambulances and is used by all of our First Responder, Emergency Medical Technician-Basic, and higher level, certified personnel .

 Basic Life Support (BLS)

This device is used when a patient can no longer adequately breath for themselves.  The BVM can either be used on room air or plugged in to an oxygen cylinder (this way is more effective).  The provider then puts the BVM over the patient's mouth and nose and squeezes the "bag" which forces are into the patient's lungs.

The Combitube is basically an advanced BLS airway opener.  If the patient's airway is completely closed this tube is inserted into the airway and a small "balloon" is inflated to open the patient's airway so they can receive oxygen.

The EpiPen is used to patient's with allergic reactions.  It is about the size of a large marker and is filled with a drug called Epinephrine.  The EpiPen has a needle on the end of it and can either be injected by the patient or by the healthcare provider.

The Glucometer is used to check a person's sugar level.  The kit contains the AccuCheck unit, Lancets, test strips, alcohol swabs, and bandaids.  When this is used one of the patient's fingers is cleaned on the end with the alcohol swab and then is pricked with the lancet and the blood is then placed on the test strip which is already in the unit.  Within a few seconds the unit will give the provider a reading of the patient's sugar level.

This is used for patients that may have swallowed something.  Ipecac makes the patient vomit once it is taken to bring back up what is not supposed to be in the stomach.  However, this should not be given to a patient that has swallowed something such as bleach or any other acidic material because such liquid would damage the body coming back up.
